Gallagher's is Family Friendly
When you think of the Village at Gallagher's Canyon, several images may come to mind. Elegant homes, the lush green fairways of the golf course, the spectacular setting, and, for many, the perception of Gallagher's being a good place to retire. The notion of a young family choosing this community as their place of choice might not spring to mind immediately. Nevertheless, there are several young families that feel quite at home at Gallagher's, thank you very much.

"We drove through the community and loved what we saw. We bought our lot 2 weeks later." Mike and Dawn Coyston moved to Gallagher's from a suburb outside of Vancouver. "We were on a cul de sac and there were 24 kids in
the neighborhood. We felt a little outnumbered. It's quieter here. We know who our kids are playing with. It's a safer, smaller community feeling. We like that."

Like any other buyer, young families have a list of things they're looking for in a new home. For the Coystons, Gallagher's fit the bill perfectly. "We both golf, and the whole family is into hiking in the canyon. In the summer we go swimming in the river to cool off. Our kids get a real kick out of seeing the wildlife and walking through the forest. It was the setting that really decided us on Gallagher's. To be honest, we weren't even really looking to move to the Okanagan at the time, but one visit to the community convinced us that this was the place we wanted to live. I intend to be here 'til I retire."

Colin Hughes and his wife Gillian agree. "It's really nice up here. Natural, away from things, safe. We looked at everything that was on the market in Kelowna and nothing offered us what we found at Gallagher's. We had more
privacy here, and the setting was much nicer. We could build the house we wanted here and knew it would retain it's value. "

Colin and Gillian have two little girls, aged 5 and 3. Again, a feeling of security was something the Hughes found at Gallagher's. "It's a very open community. You know everyone, and people look out for each other. If
someone appears who doesn't belong, we'll know about it It's close knit, and a lot of the older couples love to see children in the community."

John and Katrina Patterson are another family who've chosen to make Gallagher's home. They have also found the community to be quite "family friendly". "They had a family tobogganing party up here and we had a lot of people coming out, including some of the older residents. I think they love watching the kids have fun and often they bring their grandchildren along. They actually have quite a few activities planned for families."

"Oh, absolutely. Nikki (Gallagher's Activity Coordinator Nikki Blanleil) does a great job! We use the pool at least once a week with the kids. Our girls are in swimming lessons at the        activity centre. You could probably do something with other families in the community once a month." agrees Colin Hughes. Townhouse residents Kevin and Linda White, who have a 10 and 11 year old, add, "You could have your whole social life taken care of here at Gallagher's, if you wanted to."

The Whites moved to Gallagher's after returning from Toronto and picked the townhomes because of maintenance free lifestyle they offered. "We have more time to enjoy what Kelowna has to offer. The children are starting to get into golf, we have a boat...it's just really neat for kids up here." When asked if the lack of a backyard was a drawback, Linda responded, "Are you kidding? My kids have a whole golf course for a back yard in the summer, and hills they can go tobogganing on in the winter. I wish I had a backyard like that when I was a kid. It's like living in a resort. It's wonderful...it really feels like a getaway up here!"

Nikki Blanleil echoes Gallagher's enthusiasm for families. "We really love planning activities for families. In the summer, we have family hikes on the trestles (on the Kettle Valley Railway in Myra Canyon), barbeques, pizza parties. In the winter, we've had toboggan parties, wiener roasts and hot chocolate. This year, I'd like to plan water skiing lessons for the kids and perhaps a family houseboat excursion. If the families that are here want more activities, all they have to do is ask." Gallagher's also has children's swimming lessons, family craft sessions, kids-aerobics and other family oriented activities.

If you're looking for a new neighborhood for your family, don't overlook the charms of The Village at Gallagher's. The families we spoke to where invariably enthusiastic about the community. The security, amenities, setting and neighbors all added up to a perfect family environment that was impossible to match anywhere else in Kelowna. Plus, the parents were thrilled with the idea that this was a lifestyle choice that would have just as much to offer on that inevitable day when their children moved away from home. Not to put pressure on the kids or anything!
